Session 1 Differentiating Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing for SEN/ALN Learners in Mainstream Lessons

It  focuses on the four aspects of literacy: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. Mike will explore a variety of ways classroom teachers can differentiate each of these to support  learners with ALN, helping them to access learning and experience success. The starting point is an acknowledgement that learners with ALN  may need some additional support, but that this does not have to mean a hugely increased workload for the classroom teacher. Through careful planning and adaptation, we can meet the needs of these learners within the framework of the lesson and do so efficiently and effectively.

Session 2:  is on Building Perseverance and Motivation of SEN/ALN Learners in Mainstream Lessons

Session 2 looks at the self-perceptions  learners  with ALN may bring to lessons, and how this can influence their ability to engage with learning, take risks and persevere in the face of difficulties. After looking at growth mindsets and using this as an explanatory framework for learner self-perceptions, the rest of the session is practical. Mike shares a range of techniques and strategies around language and mistakes that teachers can use to help change how their ALN learners perceive learning and their own abilities.
